I had an idea for a PETRIXXX Show HOI4 mod with a bunch of shit like a cod zombies mode and every world conquest ending in revelations & judgement day, with the exception of playing as Jeb Bush. It would really fit the "nintendo & valve characters as monarchists vs omori & nu-smg4 characters as communists" dynamic of my machinimas.

Really enjoying the Fallen Continent series.

This was great as a primer, looking forward to the next one.

I played a lot of Vic2, Eu4 and ck3 (occasionally still do but less time in my late 20s with a job and flat and relationship!), and dabbled in Hoi3 and then 4 when it came out, including some of the mods in your series. I think a game somewhere between the two would be idea.

I was more of a Total War guy than a paradox person, so I never got into HOI4 or any of their games, but this was still quote cool to learn about. Looking forward to the next installments

Same, but the trend with Total War hasn't been good - They've simplified it so much the player barely has agency.

I remember I had to download a tool for HOI3 to help me organize my divisions in corps, corps into armies, and armies into army groups and then assign generals to each level because it’s was too much of a pain to do it in-game.

Thanks for the deep dive. I love these games but dear lord the time commitment. I've given them up but it's still fun to read about them.

Enjoyed Stellaris quite a lot. Great modding community over there.

I was so unbelievably disappointed with this game after learning how to play over the course of a day and starting a run as the United States with the intention of declaring war on Mexico and fulfilling my political fantasy of a United North America do discover that annexing latinxstan was not possible without the approval of Congress. My mind snapped.

“Approval of Congress? So I’m just the President? Who the FUCK wants to be president? I should BE congress. What I, the player, want should be the sole desire of every citizen in the nation, what kind of a retard would make a game this way!?”

I immediately uninstalled and left a bad steam review and havnt looked back since.

I haven't played as vanilla USA in ages but you could probably use the focus tree to switch to fascism, which gives you way more options in terms of expansion. Playing as democracy in vanilla HoI4 is just shooting yourself in the foot. The game is fun, but it's a bit of a guilty pleasure. Kind of the junk food of Grand Strategy. You're not missing out though.

These days I just play Stellaris on Xbox with my buddies against memey custom factions like Mug maniacs/Barqs boys, house Harkkonen and the gay niggers from outer space
