This is probably the wrong spot to ask but I'm curious: have you ever thought of making a piece about what life is like in the white regions of the map? I recognize that this is a very broad concept but also a way to answer some of the questions I assume people have about the greater biosphere of the post nuclear US.
This would be a great topic to address in the “roundup” article that will bookend this series. It will also get touched upon a little in the Rhode Island article, once I get around to it. To tide you over until then, the NEZs article describes something similar.
The white areas are not entirely depopulated, just sparsely-populated and packing much in the way of permanent ruling authorities. There are some decently-sized towns in these zones, who simply lack long-term leadership and frequently change hands between rival factions. This is especially the case in the Badlands, where most extant factions are nomadic gangs that squat on a town until they’ve dried up its resources and move on to the next.
This is all very well thought out. I love the attention to detail. This must have taken a lot of work. Who knows? You may very well be right. I hope WWIII doesn't happen, but given human nature, it will be no surprise at all.
US-held positions nuked mostly by the enemy, the rest of Cuba by the US. No powers were above hitting friendly or neutral nations, though. It’s WWIII, everyone’s a bastard.

Who exactly fired the nukes at Cuba? I guess it'd have to be the Sino-Russian alliance since the US occupied it?
Man I'd be pissed as fuck if I were Cuban and I got nuked by my own allies
